Andrae's Bakery

The first store to welcome visitors coming north on Historic Highway 49 to Amador City is this fantastic bakery and cheese shop!

Upon smelling the fresh-baked aroma of artisan breads and pastries, you'll want to experience Andrae's Bakery and Cheese Shop, located in this historic Gold Rush town. The bakery building was designed by local architects; Jane Duncombe drew the plans and Susan Bragstad sketched three facades inspired by Amador City's inventory of historic building forms. The options: the Amador Hotel, The Amador Whitney Museum, and a large barn out on Water Street. Jane chose the barn. Constructed on land used for stockpiling firewood, this building fits right into the historic panorama of Amador City.

Owners Matt and Kimberly opened the shop in 2000 with a French hearth oven. They started with only a few items. From the beginning, quality was superb and locals gave it a vigorous thumbs up. It wasn't long before folks from neighboring towns and far beyond began making the drive to experience this unique phenomena - a world class bread, pastry bakery in the smallest incorporated city in California. Word travels fast and far when something fantastic is going on.

Andrae's has something for everyone: delicious baked goods, hard to find beer, carefully selected local wines, local, domestic and imported cheeses, original Amador Olive Oil, other local olive oils and a host of other special items. Still using Amador County fruits, vine ripened tomatoes from local growers, organic whole wheat flour, residue-free white flour, and other organic products, the quality remains the same. Seasonal baked goods and innovative products continually delight customers. Books, specialty salts, unique dishes and other items for the table round out the inventory. Seasonal bakery creations grace many a family holiday table.

Hours Open: Thursday through Sunday, 8am - 4pm.

Seasons Open: Through the year.

Price Style for this Establishment: Moderate pricing

Jeff Gardner wrote on April 18, 2012: Words cannot describe the quality of baked goods you will find here. Cookies, scones, truffles, bread... oh yes, the bread is unbelievable. Sandwiches, cheese, beer, wine, homemade spice blends. If gold can still be found in the foothills, this is definitely the place.
