Auburn Drug Co.

Downtown Since 1896
Step Back in Time

Auburn Drug Company, Inc. has been dispensing its special brand of service for over 114 years. Whether it's a prescription for a lifesaving 21st Century drug, or a chocolate ice cream soda from its vintage marble soda fountain, Auburn Drug Co. has combined modern convenience with old fashioned “service with a smile.”

In a changing fast-paced world, Auburn Drug Company has accomplished what few other businesses nationwide have. It reflects an era in American history when the neighborhood drug store was a social gathering place that made customers feel good inside and out. Whether coming from behind the pharmacy counter, or from within the vintage oak display cases packed with gift items, or served from its original Tiffany marble soda fountain, each order comes with a friendly smile.

While today’s complicated prescriptions are a far cry from what they were over a century ago, the formula for success has changed little. Auburn Drug Co. has been a labor of love for its owners and their families. For generations of young people, this downtown Auburn establishment has offered them their first employment opportunity, working behind the counter of the soda fountain. Auburn Drug Co. not only has the look of a turn-of-the-century drug store, but the feel of one as well. It is truly a step back in time.

Today, well over a million prescriptions have passed over the counter to area residents. Children who once climbed onto the oak stools in front of the soda fountain now make the Auburn Drug Co. a mandatory stop when visiting downtown. These days, however, they lift their grandchildren up onto those cherished stools. While time may have passed, both grandparents and grandchildren can sit and enjoy a famous green Irish Soda, an Auburn mainstay, its secret recipe known only to pharmacists.

For visitors and regular customers alike, a step into the Auburn Drug Co. is like a family visit. The owners and customers share a common bond and appreciation of Auburn history and a sometimes forgotten American business practice – that a smile, even in the 21st Century, is a commodity to be valued. Auburn Drug Co. is much more than a drug store; it is a mirror reflecting a century of Auburn history. More important, it is also a look into Auburn’s future, and a reminder that while all things change, sometimes the best things stay the same.
