The Bear Valley Lodge is situated in the quaint Village of Bear Valley along Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway (Hwy 4) where John Ebbetts explored over a century ago. The Bear Valley area was originally named Grizzly Bear Valley. In August of 1855, O.B. Powers led a scouting expedition funded by business interests from nearby townships to seek a trans-Sierra route. The first written designation of the area being called "Bear Valley" was found in a stagecoach itinerary from 1869.

There are tales of notable personalities such as Jedediah Smith who came through the area in 1827 and Major John Ebbetts who arrived in 1850. “Major” John Ebbetts was a 33-year-old mountain man who was hired as a guide for a group of New York prospectors to help them travel over the Sierra Nevada and into California.

In 1853 John Ebbetts led a survey party back into the vicinity of the pass named for him in an attempt to locate a possible route for a transcontinental railroad into California from the east. Bear Valley came into prominence when this trail route, as identified by Ebbetts, was developed into a wagon trail by a group of businessmen from Murphys.

Take 580 East to 205 East to 120 East to 99 North to 4 East and continue to Bear Valley.

FROM SACRAMENTO
Take 99 South to 12 East to 49 South to 4 East and continue to Bear Valley.

FROM LAKE TAHOE / RENO
Winter: Take 80 West, 50 West, or 88 West from the greater Lake Tahoe basin, to 99 South to 4 East and continue to Bear Valley. (Ebbetts Pass is closed in winter). Summer: Take 4 West off of 88 at Woodfords and continue to Bear Valley.

Turn onto Bear Valley Rd for about 1/4 mile. We are on the right hand side in the Village Center.
