Buffalo Chips - Authentic American Comfort Food in Amador City

Right in the middle of historic Amador City is home cooking at its best!

Buffalo Chips is located in this historic Gold Rush town in Amador County. Restauranteur Maria Baker arrived several decades ago after seeing her ancestral home, restaurant, resort and lands carved up by war in Europe. Discovering the peace and serenity of the area, she settled here and soon opened Buffalo Chips Emporium. Not a lot is known about the historic building that houses this fine comfort food restaurant. It is thought that William Peyton built his saloon and gambling hall here after the disastrous fire of 1878. Nothing much changed up until the 1920s.

Remember when there was enough time for Mom to make hamburgers by hand and pie crust was fresh and you knew the farmer who grew the fruit? Remember the fine ice cream cones, mile shakes so thick that you had to eat them with a spoon, hot fudge Sundays with real hot fudge (!) and fine fountain drinks? If all this was before your time, then you have found the nostalgic restaurant of your dreams!

The original condition of Amador City takes you right back to the original goodness of Mom's homemade breakfast and lunch. Locally grown organic fruit and vegetables are carefully selected when in season. Every Friday Night is Burger Bash when fine fresh burgers are made to order. If you happen to be in town on the second Thursday of the month AND have called ahead for a reservation (no, I am not kidding) then alluring aroma of fantastic stew, meatloaf or lasagna will greet you at the door! The taste is to write home about!

Residents were not surprised that Noelle Carter, Test Kitchen Manager from the LA Times raved about the pies at Buffalo Chips. http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jul/22/food/la-fo-fruitpie-20100722 We do too! In fact here is the LA Times adaptation of Ashley Putz' recipe for Blackberry Pie http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jul/22/food/la-fo-fruitpierecc-20100722

Buffalo Chips might certainly be the center of the universe for comfort food. Locals eat here all the time. These are the folks of Amador City, Drytown, Pokerville, Bunker Hill and surrounding ranches. Here you might meet a member of one of the oldest families in the County, a cowboy, a rancher, a shop owner, an artist, a book dealer, a spinner, an expert in mining artifacts.

With 90 plus households and only 200 people, Amador City is the smallest incorporated town in California. We are a wonderfully diverse group of folks!

Come enjoy the food and get to know us!
