Kayakers and Tufa Towers

Caldera Kayaks is a Mono Lake guardian and we do annual benefit tours for the Mono Lake Committee. We have a special use permit with the U.S. Forest Service and also with the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation to operate commercial tours on Mono Lake. We have been in operation since 1994 and have seen a few positive changes on Mono Lake in increasing water levels.

Areas of Service and Expertise

Caldera Kayaks is a locally owned guide and outfitter service that leads natural history kayak tours on Mono Lake and other Eastern Sierra lakes.

Some of the Eastern Sierra's most dramatic scenery can best be viewed from the water, and Caldera Kayaks will take you there. Explore vast and ancient tufa formations at Mono Lake and kayak to Rush Creek on a guided natural history tour.

There are lots of places to paddle kayaks and canoes while enjoying great scenery. We have paddled the Eastern Sierra lakes and can give you current information so you can enjoy the areas waterways.

Types of Experiences and Trips Provided

Guided natural history tours of Mono Lake let you experience one of the oldest living lakes from the unique perspective of a kayak. Paddle through fascinating tufa formations and along Mono Lakes intriguing shoreline towards Rush Creek. Paddle the Long Valley Caldera on scenic Crowley Lake and explore shoreline formed by the forces of nature. Lakefront kayak rentals, lessons and sales at the Crowley Lake Marina make it convenient and easy to paddle the Eastern Sierra. Fish the Eastern Sierra from stable sit-on-top kayaks and get out on the water where the fish are biting.

No experience necessary. Families and children welcome.

 Eco-Friendly Notes

Kayaks are a great way to explore local water ways and do not use any gasoline or oil for power.

Rebecca Brown wrote on June 15, 2010: Caldera Kayaks are right! Mono Lake is an amazing place, and seeing it from the water enhances the experience far more than standing on the shoreline. Go for it!
