The California State Mining and Mineral Museum exhibits the official State of California Mineral Collection which was started in 1880. The collection consists of over 14,000 minerals from California, the United States and around the world. Some of the finest minerals, gems and precious metals are on exhibit. This is a great place to see California gold including the 13.8 pound crystalline gold specimen called the "Fricot Nugget" which dates back to the gold rush era. The museum is dedicated to teaching the public about the importance of mining and minerals in our history, environment and our daily lives. We offer free children's activities including our Junior Ranger Program. We also provide free school tours relating to geology, rocks and minerals, the gold rush and mining history, by reservation.

Location/Directions: Located at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds, 1.8 miles south of Mariposa on historic Highway 49. Turn left into the fairgrounds.

Seasons Open: Beginning November 1st, 2009, the California State Mining and Mineral Museum will be open Thursday thru Sunday and closed to the public Monday through Wednesday.

Hours Open: Winter Hours (Oct 1-Apr 30): 10:00am - 4:00pm; Summer Hours (May 1-Sept 30): 10:00am-5:00pm.

Fees: Adults $4, children 12 and under free.
