This handbook is a must have guide for the horse camper and trail rider in the Central Sierra and Yosemite. The 19 trails listed in this book include Yosemite National Park, Bass Lake, Fish Camp and Peckinpah Mountain, plus 3 lower elevation winter rides. Detailed information on riding time, trail type, months when trails are available, elevation, terrain, difficulty and facilities at trail-head are listed, as well as equestrian campgrounds and cabin rentals with horse accommodations. The contact list includes the Sierra National Forest, Bass Lake Ranger Station and the Yosemite Visitors Bureau, to name a few.
This book is the only horseback trail guide for the Central Sierra and Yosemite. There are no other written guides for many of the trails listed in this book. The book has over 100 pages and includes detailed driving and riding instructions. There are color and black and white photos for every ride. Of all the trail and hiking books in print, this is the only guide written for horseback riders. There are trails for beginners and trails for the more experience riders.
This handbook stresses the importance of proper trail etiquette, especially when sharing trails with hikers within Yosemite National Park. The book includes trails shared by pack and rental horses, and informs the reader which direction the horses travel and encourage the reader to do likewise.
Trail Distance: All of the trails listed are day rides ranging from 3 to 6 hours in length, not including stops.
Vertical Gain or Loss: Elevations range from 1,000 to 8,500 feet.
Availability of water for horses is mentioned for each trail.
All mentioned in detail in the guidebook.
This book was written by two North Fork women who are known as avid trail riders, familiar with many of the horse trails in the area.
"Leave no trace" is stressed as well as not removing artifacts if found.
Lists campgrounds with accommodations for horses.

Sandra Dyer wrote on January 22, 2012: Having traveled to Yosemite National Park last summer with horses, this guide book was essential for us to find the horse friendly trails. The trails are well mapped and described. I don’t know that we could have found many of the trails without this book. I rate this an 11 on a scale from 1 to 10.
Robert L. Vaughn wrote on March 18, 2011: Trails listed are some of the best horseback riding trails in Yosemite. You will not find any trail books for equestrians in Yosemite. Well written and fairly easy to follow. Great pictures. The two books complement each other well.
Rachel McDaniels wrote on February 24, 2011: The trails in the two books are awesome! They are mapped and described well. Anybody considering camping with horses in Yosemite must have these books. They are the only horse trail books written about this area. Many, many trails in Yosemite! Wow. Good job ladies.
