Dinkey Creek Recreation Area

Dinkey Creek Historic Bridge

Dinkey Creek Recreation Area is located along beautiful Dinkey Creek on the Sierra National Forest and includes the Dinkey Historical Bridge. The Dinkey Historical Bridge is a redwood, bowstring arch truss bridge, which may be the only one of its kind in California. It was among the first bridges in America to utilize steel, split-ring timber-connecting devices; a design that gave wood bridges strength to carry heavy loads. This bridge was built in 1938 and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The McKinley Grove is only a few minutes away from Dinkey Creek.  The McKinley Grove is a paved, accessible interpretive trail that winds through the grove of ancient and towering giant sequoia trees along the McKinley Grove Road. The views of these magnificent trees are spectacular. Picnic facilities and accessible toilets are available.

Dinkey Creek is a favorite spot for avid stream anglers looking to hoop up a rainbow trout. The limit is five per day, ten in possession.  Fishing season begins the last weekend in April and continues through November 15.  Contact the High Sierra Ranger District Office at (559) 855-5355 to confirm the fishing season. You must have a valid California state fishing license and all state fishing regulations apply.

To get there take Hwy 168 east of Clovis to the Dinkey Creek Road (just before your get to Shaver Lake). Follow the Dinkey Creek Road east to Dinkey Creek. The Forest Service Ranger Station is open in the summer, Thursday through Monday. There are privately owned businesses (store, cabins) in the local area that provide public services.

Recreational Opportunities

Dinkey Creek Recreation Area is a popular area for its campgrounds, picnic areas, cabins, store, fishing, and hiking. There is a public horseback riding stable available.

Dinkey Creek is also a  popular swimming area with large pools and sandy beaches for swimmers.  There is no lifeguard on duty and swimming is not recommended in spring when water levels are high.

The campground and picnic area is located on a large sandy flat above the river. Cedar and pine trees provide pleasant shading.

Seasons Accessible

Season of use is May through September.

Fees: Picnic area fees are $3 per vehicle. Contact the National Recreation Reservation Service at www.ReserveUSA.com for campground reservations.
