The Donner Lake Rim Trail (DLRT) is a project of the Truckee Donner Land Trust and an all volunteer effort to build a trail encircling the peaks around Donner Lake. Hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians can enjoy the stunning views of the Lake, Mount Rose and the Pacific Crest, which will be 23 miles when complete. Trails will run from downtown Truckee to Donner Summit and connect with existing trails, including the Summit Lake Trail, the Hole-in-the-Ground Trail, and the trails leading into the proposed Castle Peak Wilderness. The anticipated completion of the entire trail is fall of 2012.

Portions of the trail are being stewarded by an army of volunteers who work throughout the summer and fall to maintain it.

The completed portion of the Donner Lake Rim Trail (10 miles) can be accessed from several places and is marked with blue and white emblem trail markers. If you are not familiar with the areas noted, be sure to consult a detailed area map, and/or a person well acquainted with the described areas. Access can be found from: Negro Canyon, Tahoe Donner, I-80 at the Summit, Castle Valley Road.

Vertical Gain or Loss: 2,000 feet

Trail Distance: 23 miles when complete
