Established by the Donner Summit Historical Society, the Donner Summit Visitor's Center was put together with the help of locals interested in preserving the history that is unique to the famous Donner Pass.
The Visitor's Center is located inside an historic old hotel dating back to the 1930s which sits atop Donner Summit, which is befitting for the period photos and relics contained within the Visitor's Center.
In addition to having thousands of photos and local history books available to view or purchase, the Visitor's Center includes information about local hiking trails, nearby activities, and interesting cultural stories pertinent to the area.
To be completed by Summer 2010, there will be a 20-mile long museum, with interpretive signs having photos and stories about the area all along the Old Historic Highway 40 scenic route that travels over the Donner Summit.
