Located in North Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City offers an array of year-round activities including snow sports in winter, and hiking, camping, fishing, and water sports in summer. This small town  is a wonderful place to spend time with the family, enjoy world-class recreation or just relax and enjoy the view.

HISTORY:

From the early days of Washoe camps to logging the basin to support mines in Virginia City to fancy resorts, Tahoe City has hosted a variety of residents over the years. The earliest settlers of European descent came in the late 1800s following John C. Fremont's sighting of the lake in 1844.

Travelers would come by train to Truckee and then wagon train or narrow gauge rail (where the present paved bike path is located today) to Tahoe City. There they were greeted by the Steamer Tahoe which could take them to a different destination at the lake or supply a day's activity.

The Tahoe Tavern was a majestic, all inclusive resort stretching for miles, including a ski hill (Granlibakken), golf course (Tahoe City Golf Course), stables, a movie theater, boat rentals and more. Amenities multiplied as summer residents extended their stays until many families lived here year round.

Lake Tahoe was exposed to the world during the 1960 Winter Olympics. Growth was quick to follow as our sleepy mountain town was discovered by the thousands of visitors who frequent the Tahoe Basin today.

Tahoe City remains a vibrant and prosperous place to live, visit and work. With an average of 2,000 annual residents and population swelling to over 25,000 during big annual events such as the Annual 4th of July Celebration, Tahoe City is truly the gateway to North Lake Tahoe.

Our quiet, local town maintains a strong character in an era of mega-villages and big box malls. Our coffee shops, eateries, lakeside paths and cobblestone sidewalks embody the true character of North Lake Tahoe and offer a visitor experience like nowhere else!

Tahoe City is located 15 miles from the town of Truckee and I-80 corridor. We are less than three hours from San Francisco and a mere 45 minutes from Reno, Nevada. There are numerous shuttle services from Reno and Amtrak service from the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California. The Reno-International Airport offers flights daily from world-wide destinations.

When in the downtown area look for Tahoe Area Regional Transit (TART) bus stops and Tahoe Trolley stops to get around. While Downtown Tahoe City is less than one mile from end -to-end, the TART system connects visitors with all major ski resorts, beaches, state parks, neighboring towns and historic sites.

Pet Friendly Notes
Our local PUD and Human Society have designated an area near Conner's Field in downtown for all dogs to play and enjoy. Dogs are welcome in most businesses through town and at the Lake Forest beach just east of downtown.
