Emma Nevada House

Built in 1856, the house is the childhood home of Madame Emma Nevada, an opera star who performed during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Just outside the business district, the home is surrounded by several other historic Victorians, in a quiet neighborhood. Having fallen into disrepair, the house was completely renovated between 1991 and 1994.

Emma was the daughter of Dr. William Wixom, who was a physician for the Alpha Diggins nearby. At the age of three she is reputed to have gotten up in front of the town on the Fourth of July, and sang the "Star Spangled Banner" for everyone. Eventually she went to Mills Seminary (now Mills College) in Oakland. After finishing there she went off to Europe, where she encountered the composer Giuseppe Verdi. In time she became an opera star, and sang at La Scala, sang with Enrico Caruso, and became Queen Victoria's favorite. For her stage name she was known as Madame Emma Nevada.
