First Presbyterian Church of Carson City has been the spiritual home of thousands of Nevadans since its start in 1861. Orion Clemens, brother of Samuel Clemens, aka Mark Twain, was no less influential than his famous brother, partially thanks to his efforts on behalf of Nevada’s oldest operating church. As a founding member of the church, Orion helped raise funds for the construction of the historic church building built in 1864.

In the 147 years since the original building was constructed, it has gone through numerous facelifts and additions. Over the years sections have been built and torn down and rebuilt as the congregation grew or the building succumbed to weather and age. The original sanctuary remains as a historic landmark while a new, weatherproof sanctuary now houses the flock but items from throughout the church’s long history remain in use. What has resulted is a beautiful amalgamation of old and new; tradition and progress. Inside you can see beautiful stained glass from different decades, the bible dedicated to Jennifer Clemens, Mr. Twain’s niece, and a baptismal font that has served many different generations of some of the same families.
