Granlibakken Conference Center and Lodge

Norwegian for "a hillside sheltered by fir trees," Granlibakken Resort was built on an area rich in history. Granlibakken ski hill was once called Olympic Hill, site of an ice rink, toboggan slide and jump hill since 1928. The area was first developed during the era of the Steamer Tahoe (which transported mail, freight, and passengers from Glenbrook to Tahoe City from the 1890s - 1930s) and the Lake Tahoe Railway and Transportation Company railroad line from Truckee to Tahoe City. During this time the Tahoe Tavern (a lodge and restaurant) was built and became known for its winter activities. It was also the founding site of the Lake Tahoe Ski Club in 1929 (which has had more national championship members than any other Ski Club in the US), and was often chosen as the site for contests and exhibitions such as the 1936 California State Championships and the 1939 National Ski Association meet.

The area is known for being one of the first ski resorts in Tahoe. The ski resort was developed in the 1940's by "Rusty" Rustad. The Granlibakken Lodge and Conference Center we see today was once UC Berkeley's International House, a UC Alumni education/rec center and a Four Seasons. Throughout all these changes, the history and memories of Olympic Hill live on.
