With many graves of children dating from the 1800s, some of which read "Unknown Child," Halcumb Cemetery offers a glimpse into the hard lives of the pioneer families who resided in the foothills of Shasta County.
The location beside the highway near Montgomery Creek reveals the historic nature of the transportation route now known as California Highway 299. The picturesque green grass, rolling hills, and surrounding landscape from Halcumb are quintessential Shasta County foothill terrain.
Several picnic tables are located near the entrance to the cemetery and benches are scattered throughout, making the open space a welcome rest stop for travelers in the Northern Sierra Cascade.
Hours Open: Daylight hours
Time Period Represented: 1880s through the present
Seasons Open: Open year-round, weather permitting. Highway 299 often sees chain restrictions/closures in winter.
A paved loop road circles much of the cemetery. A couple of the picnic tables located near the entrance from Highway 299 are also ADA accessible.
Pets are not allowed.
