Nikki Crain

Nestled among the foothills of the Sierra Nevada along the South Fork of the Kaweah River you will find the busy weaving studio of Nikki Crain.  The studio is well stocked with colorful yarns and 6 looms, each with a different project. Nikki delights in welcoming visitors by appointment or on special occasions when the studio is open to the public.

Weaving is her passion and she enjoys sharing it with others. When you visit Nikki's studio you will feel like you are high in the mountains when, in fact, you are at an elevation of only 1,600 feet.  Through the open windows, you can hear the rushing water of the river as it tumbles over granite rocks. Gazing through the windows conveys the feeling of being in a tree house and looking beyond you will see the snow capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

Nikki grew up in Kansas, Nebraska and North Dakota. At the age of 12, she moved to Long Beach, California. Always longing to leave the big city, she and her husband, Richard, moved to Three Rivers in 1980 where she finally felt she had come "home".  After working in offices for 38 years, she finds it soothing to walk across the lawn to spend the day in her studio which was build by her husband.

Full Explanation

Nikki is a weaver who first sat down at a loom in 1983. She has been on a learning odyssey ever since. Her weaving illustrates her love of color and natural fibers. She prefers to weave with cotton, rayon, silk, bamboo, wool and alpaca. She dyes many of her own yarns and with excitement says it reminds her of playing with a brand new box of crayons.  Math is a big part of weaving, and Nikki has taken this to a higher level by incorporating the Fibonacci sequence in many of her designs. It is her philosophy that practical household items and clothing should be beautiful and give pleasure to the owner. Her handwoven pieces are one-of-a-kind or part of a limited edition. In keeping with her preference for natural ingredients, Nikki also pours and decorates healthy 100% soy candles. Her lovely hand made items are available for purchase at Colors Art Gallery and The Art Co-op in Three Rivers.

For those who wish to learn the ancient art of weaving, Nikki gives lessons in her studio. Contact her for more information.

Nikki has been a participant in 1st Saturday in Three Rivers since its inception.  She is the 2010-2011 president of Handweavers of the Valley, a weaving and spinning guild with members from Bakersfield to Fresno and throughout other areas of the southern San Joaquin Valley.  Three Rivers Artists' Biennial Studio Tour has included Nikki since it began. She is a contributing member of the Arts Alliance of Three Rivers and part of the committee that produces the popular Redbud Festival every Mother's Day Weekend. Other events in which she regularly participates are the Environmental Weekend, Living History Day, The Perfect Gift Boutique and Holiday Bazaar. Nikki and her husband are active members of the Sierra Traditional Jazz Club and help produce the Annual Jazzaffair in Three Rivers every April. Nikki serves on the club's Board of Directors. She and her husband also volunteered on the local ambulance company for 22 years.

The first time I saw Nikki’s weaving shop I felt like I'd stepped back in time. Wall to wall looms of various sizes, all with bright threads strung across, each loom with a project she was working on in a beautiful setting in Three Rivers. Her walls covered in yarns, a rainbow of colors. A must stop if visiting Three Rivers, or passing through to the National Parks. You won't find a more gracious hostess.
