Event Dates: June 01, 2013

About this Event

Happy Trails in South Lake Tahoe is one of thousands of events taking place across the country as part of the American Hiking Society's annual Trails Day Celebration(c). Participants can choose from a variety of trail experiences that offer a unique connection to the environment, wildlife, and cultural history, ultimately creating lasting memories of Lake Tahoe.

The City of South Lake Tahoe Department of Parks and Recreation partner with private and public organizations and local volunteers will present the annual Happy Trails. A brief description of Happy Trail events are listed below.

Kayaking on the Lake Tahoe Water Trail will allow participants to get up close to a variety of shorebirds along the way. Kayaking tips and paddling techniques will also be offered.

A guided mountain bike ride along South Shore's most scenic trails will be offered, including tips on biking technique and trail etiquette.

Local bird experts will lead participants on an easy hike along the Taylor Creek Trail in search of the wide variety of migratory birds that flock to Lake Tahoe in the spring. June is known for unusual bird sightings at Lake Tahoe.

A guided interpretive hike along the historic Lam Watah Meadows Trail will escort participants back in time when the Washoe Tribe inhabited the meadow. Evidence of the tribe still exist today for public viewing. Other educational points of interest during this hike include geology and tree identification.

Children can get closer to nature by creating nature art and participating in a scavenger hunt at Explore Tahoe, an Urban Trailhead.

Join the Tahoe Rim Trail Association to help build the newest section of the Tahoe Rim Trail at Daggett Summit in South Lake Tahoe. All ages are invited to participate in this ultimate opportunity to contribute to ensuring the sustainability of one of Lake Tahoe's greatest recreation assets ~ the 165 mile Tahoe Rim Trail.

Explore Tahoe – An Urban Trailhead is base camp for all Happy Trails events. Explore Tahoe is a visitor center that features informal presentations and interactive exhibits about the geology, wildlife, and cultural heritage of Lake Tahoe, as well as outdoor recreational and cultural activities available in South Lake Tahoe. Located in the transportation hub at the Heavenly Village, Explore Tahoe staff can help plan excursions throughout south shore utilizing mass transit to help reduce emissions and protect Lake Tahoe’s natural resources.

Public transportation is highly encouraged throughout South Lake Tahoe. For route info and times, visit http://www.bluego.org/services.aspx or call (530) 541-7149.
