Hope Valley Outdoors offers cross-country and telemark skis and snowshoe rentals along 60 miles of trails in the heart of Alpine County. We also offer lessons and guided tours, and we can provide experienced information for just about all your winter outdoor explorations in the Lake Tahoe area.
Our trail system includes Hope Valley Wildlife Area. On a regular basis we see a pair of bald eagles, blue heron, osprey, and even a bobcat. Of course the coyotes are around too. We usually see evidence of the local bears sneaking out of hibernation on some of the sunny warm days.
While Hope Valley was first seen by John Fremont and Kit Carson in their famous mid winter trip across the Sierra in 1844, it was members of the Mormon Battalion returning from the Mexican War of '46-'47 who named the lovely valley in 1848. After the Donner Party tragedy during the big winter of 1846, over 55,000 immigrants veered further south, choosing to come up from the Carson Valley in Nevada through the canyon and over the Pass, eventually settling into California's Central Valley and beyond. Hope Valley has seen little change since that time.
Throughout the winter we hold several cultural events to help tell the story of Hope Valley, including Basque Carving Snowshoe/SKI Tour, Sunset/Moonrise Snowshoe and Ski Tour, Full Moon Tours, Snowshoe Thompson Tour and photography slides shows. In addition to affordable rentals, your $10.00 donation or more allows us to keep the parking area plowed and over 20 miles of groomed trails. We also take care of 40 miles of marked trails to provide you with 60 miles of trails.
Our location is just a few minutes east of Kirkwood Ski Resort on Highway 88, at Pickett's Junction at the intersection of Hwy 88 and Hwy 89. We have a lovely Yurt set up during the winter. We are a short drive out to Grover Hot Springs in Markleeville. Lodging and camping are all nearby, and we are open Thanksgiving through Easter. Opening and closing depends on the snow conditions. Cell phone service is not available in the area so the best way to reach us is via the Internet.
