Huntington Lake Store

HL Store 2

Huntington Lake Store at the Eastwood Visitor Center is located at Huntington Lake near Kaiser Wilderness, eighty miles north of Fresno, California on Highway 168. The store is also a check in area for seven of our campgrounds around Huntington Lake including the Rancheria, College, Deer Creek, Kinnikinnick, Catavee, Billy Creek and Lower Billy Creek.

We are a stopping point before going to John Muir Wilderness, Kaiser Wilderness and the Ansel Adams Wilderness. The historic Mono Hot Springs Lodge and the Mono Hot Springs Campground are only forty minutes away. Mono Hot Springs Resort Restaurant is famous for their buffalo ribs and burgers. A little further up the road is Vermillion Campground located on Thomas A. Edison Lake. This lake is stocked and in 1972 a record brown trout was caught. Also on the lake is Vermillion Valley Resort, were hikers from the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail stop for a hot meal and to get resupplied for their continued trip.

Huntington Lake is considered one of the top sailing lakes by locals. Almost every weekend in the summer we host regattas which can be viewed from many of our campgrounds.

Huntington Lake is also famous for a B-24 that crashed into the lake in December of 1943 that had been on a World War II training mission. It killed 6 crew members. The plane was found in 1955 and some of the wreckage still remains.

The Huntington Lake Store is a meeting place on Thursday and Sunday for nature hikes. Our interpretive program offers a guided nature hike to Rancheria Falls and Indian Pools. The Rancheria Falls Trailhead is at 7,200 feet and ends at 8,120 feet. The falls are approximately 150 feet high and 50 feet wide. This is a gentle two mile round trip hike. Indian Pools Trail is also an easy two mile round trip. The pools have a wading area and a larger pool for swimming.

The Eastwood Visitor Center is named after John S. Eastwood who was the engineer responsible for the design and construction of the hydro-electric plants in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. Just outside our office you can see the release of the water coming down from tunnels into Huntington Lake. A memorial to John S. Eastwood is located just outside our parking lot.

The store lists directions to many of the day hiking trails in the area, including:

Coyote Lake, Red Lake, Rancheria Falls, Indian Pools, College Rock, Kaiser Peak, Coarsegrass Meadow, Nellie Lake, Mushroom Rock, Black Point, Twin Lakes and George Lake plus many more. We also have permits for overnight camping in the wilderness.

The store has many souvenir gifts and camping gear. We carry t-shirts for adults and children, posters and bear statues. We also have books on fishing, hiking and bird watching. If you’re looking for that perfect souvenir to take home, or you forgot something for your camping trip, stop by and look around.
