Iron Door Saloon

The Iron Door Saloon is California's oldest continually operating saloon and has been a saloon since 1896 when it was first called "Jake's Place". In 1937 a second story was added and games were added for entertainment. It was renamed the "The Iron Door" which was appropriate due to the hefty doors which had been hauled on mules across the Tuolumne River via Ward's Ferry. They were made in England and brought to California via Cape Horn. They were to be a fire protection device - if there was a fire in town you just closed the doors and waited until it was over (must have worked!)
In addition to stray bullet holes, you'll see the finest back bar in Groveland, historic photos of John Muir, spectacular scenery in Yosemite Valley and Hetch Hetchy Valley prior to the dam, and many antique gold mining, timber and farm implements. Of course they weren't antiques when they were acquired! Live music every weekend, with a variety of musical groups and styles and dancing is a favorite activity. The staff is knowledgeable of local camp grounds, hotels, trails, rivers and lakes.
The Iron Door Saloon is available for private parties, for wedding receptions or any other needs. There is a bar, a soda fountain, a store and they serve food and coffee from an extensive menu.
