Lava Cap Winery began in 1981. The winery is called "Lava Cap" to emphasize the special character of the volcanic soil surrounding our winery and vineyard. About 10 million years ago, the Western Slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range was covered with a thick blanket of volcanic ash. You can see the volcanic boulders around the winery.

The volcanic deposits buried older, gold-bearing stream gravel which is the "Auriferous gravel" of Gold Rush fame. The gold miners quickly learned that the richest gold deposits occur beneath the thick layer of volcanic ash. Thus, the name "lava cap" came into use as a guide to prospect for gold. The 49ers looked for these "lava caps" to know where to toil for sweet success.
