Description of Event

Mariposa's Butterfly Festival is a fun filled family weekend held the first weekend in May each year. Thousands of butterflies that have be raised by local school children and the community are released throughout the event. Friday's Chalk Art Festival is viewed all weekend on the Mariposa Creek Walkway. A Butterfly Hat Contest is just part of the Friday night reception to welcome visitors as a "Taste of Mariposa" provides a sampling of local cuisine.

Saturday opens with the Art & Artisan show in the Mariposa County Art's Park and the Butterfly Parade meanders through Historic Downtown. Special events are provided for children at the Caterpillar Kids area. More butterflies are released, skateboard demonstrations and competitions take place at the County Park's fabulous skate bowl. There is continuous free entertainment on two stages.

Sunday opens with a sunrise service followed by live entertainment. The Art & Artisans show, kid's activities and skateboard competition culminates with a massive butterfly release. Mariposa means butterfly in Spanish.
