The reservoir is approximately 60 surface acres at full, all within a 5 MPH No Wake Zone at Don Pedro Lake. The old Hetch Hetchy railroad grade is visible as it rises out of the North side of Moccasin Bay as does the old Big Oak Flat Hwy 120 (now known as Grizzley Rd). Both were submerged by the New Don Pedro Reservoir. The eastern end of the Bay is dotted with gravel tailing piles left over from hydraulic gold mining operations of the 1800s. These tailing piles now provide spawning areas for Largemouth Bass. Moccasin Creek releases cold Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct water into Moccasin Bay and provides for seasonal stream trout fishing.

Those who like to cover more distance often leave the Moccasin Bay and paddle north up the Tuolumne River Arm towards the Wards Ferry Bridge and the upper reaches of the Reservoir.

The Reservoir is generally the calmest in the mornings. Not recommended for kayaks and canoes on weekends and holidays from mid-May through Labor Day due to heavy recreational power boating activity.

Moccasin Pt. Recreation Area, exit off of Stent Jacksonville Rd. just north of Hwy. 120. Easiest launching is at Launch ramp and adjacent shoreline. No use fee for non-motorized vessels but a vehicle use fee of $7.00 per day is required of each vehicle entering the Moccasin Pt. Recreation Area.
