The hotel has always been a tourist stop and continues to be the gateway to the Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Bear Valley Mountain, and several caverns. The hotel is surrounded by specialty shops, 18 wine tasting rooms, art galleries and restaurants. The Murphys Historic Hotel specializes in conferences, banquets, family gatherings, company events and weddings.

Lodging Style and Amenities

The historic hotel is a step back in time. The Murphys Historic Hotel features 29 rooms, 9 of which are in the original historic building, which was built in 1856 and is recognized by the California Senate as the "Oldest Continuously Operated Hotel in The State, celebrating its 154th Anniversary on August 20, 2010."

All nine rooms are furnished with period antiques and have shared baths to keep with the ambiance of 1856. These rooms are named after our famous guests Mark Twain, JP Morgan, Black Bart, Susan B. Anthony and Horatio Algier. The Presidential suite that Ulysses S. Grant stayed in has the original bed from the time of his visit.

The remaining 20 rooms are our modern lodge rooms, located directly adjacent to the Historic Hotel. All 20 modern rooms have In-room coffee, flat screen cable TV, direct dial phones, Wi-Fi, iron and ironing boards.
