Nevada, the Silver State, did not earn its nickname lightly. While the California Gold Rush remains prominent in the Nation's memory, no less important were the silver veins found in the hills of the Sierra Nevada. The Nevada State Museum is the perfect place to see highlights from the most glorious days in Nevada history. Coin collectors and history buffs will delight in the museum, housed in what was once an actual working U.S. Mint. For over twenty years Carson City, Nevada was home to one of the few Mints authorized to produce U.S. Currency.

Although the Mint has been closed since the 1890s, the long history of Nevada's first coin press does not end there. Still in operation today, Coin Press Number 1 is a rare gem. It was shipped to another mint after operations ceased in Carson

City in 1893, and was purchased as a museum piece before being called back into service during a time of currency shortage. Like any proud American, Coin Press Number 1 enthusiastically answers her Nation's call during times of need, playing part in the bicentennial production, and other commemorative events. Although she was eventually converted to electric, she still makes a proud relic and centerpiece of a glorious collection of artifacts from the early days of Nevada.

Children of all ages will wonder at seeing the cultural and natural artifacts from long in Nevada's history. Marvel at fossils and rocks from the time of ancient Lake Lahontan, when the Ichthyosaur roamed the open water, witness beautiful artifacts of the many Native tribes that called the region home and immerse yourself in the collections and curios from recent history without ever having to cross the street.
