Palisade Glacier

High above Big Pine Creek is the Palisade Glacier, still holding on as the southernmost permanent glacier in North America. The glacier is located in the John Muir Wilderness, and is accessible only by foot and horseback. However, it is visible from the Glacier Lodge trail-head, which also features a lodge and campsites.

Recreational Opportunities

Camping, fishing, hiking, photography, horseback riding, bird watching, and wildlife viewing.

Seasons Accessible

The paved road up to Glacier Lodge and Campground covers a big chunk of territory and altitude during the spring, summer and fall. You can hike in the summer -- it's a long snowshoe or ski expedition in the winter.

Fees: The Palisades Glacier is part of the John Muir Wilderness, administered by the Inyo National Forest. Wilderness permits are required for overnight travel. No permit is required for day hikes. Proper food storage is require
