Pauly Falls

Pauly Falls

A tributary of the Downie River, Pauly Falls is located on Pauly Creek just upstream from its confluence with the Downieville River. Pauly Falls is adjacent to the community of Downieville and is an easy walk from anywhere in town.  From the business district of Downieville, follow Main Street through town either via vehicle, bicycle or on foot.

Follow Main Street until you get to the fourth bridge in town and after you pass over that bridge, look for the town's PG&E station on your right.  Park anywhere you can find room and follow the road/trail that passes between the power station and the community water system.  The short walk from the county road (300') takes you to a view point of the falls.

Pauly Creek and its falls are named for Benjamin Pauly, who operated a sawmill beginning in 1858 with power generated from the creek that now bears his name.  A small dam and flume from it, provided the water to turn the necessary water wheel to power the mill. There are still a few Paulys living in the area who have made this special place their home continuously since the middle of the 19th Century.
