A geotourism map of the Sierra Nevada area will include the California Sierra foothills.
Geotourism is based on the land's natural features of an area, and National Geographic is mapping the Sierra Nevada region, including 25 counties in California and Nevada. The Tahoe area is the next part of that area to be mapped.
Yosemite was mapped first and the next phase will include what National Geographic calls the Tahoe Emigrant Corridor, Washoe and Douglas counties and Carson City in Nevada, and El Dorado, Nevada and Placer counties in California.
At each step National Geographic and its partners compile information about area attractions, accommodations, restaurants and museums. Visitors can provide feedback on areas they visit.
The group will seek recommendations this summer for places to be featured, but people can continue to add to the map as an ongoing project.
The Tahoe site is expected to launch in November this year.
The geotourism map of the Yosemite Gateway is at www.sierranevadageotourism.org.
