The trailhead sits in a high Eastern Sierra meadow, at about 10,000', at the end of Rock Creek Road. A small walk-in campground is nestled among the trees along Rock Creek, just above fishing hole. Surrounded by 13,000 peaks, the trail follows the creek much of the way. Hikers can head over Mono Pass, at 12,400', or continue along Rock Creek over Morgan Pass, 11,000'.

Starting in Inyo National Forest, the trail enters the John Muir Wilderness as Rock Creek cuts through Little Lakes Valley. The creek meanders through a number of high country meadows and cascades into a series of lakes--Mack, Marsh, Heart, Long Chickenfoot, and Gem--within the first few miles.
