Travel back in time and experience Sequoia National Park through the eyes of a unique historical character, whose stories will add intrigue and entertainment to your visit! Enjoy the luxury of dining among the trees, as you feast on a well-deserved traditional barbecue. Learn how the Giant Forest became home to a Utopian community that viewed the land as an opportunity to attain freedom from the hardships of the Industrial Revolution. 

This evening event includes a full meal followed by an historic reenactment of a colorful character from the past. Hear how the park influenced the life of a female visitor during a time when the park’s resources were seen from a different perspective, and the role of women showed tremendous growth. Meet a young student of Walter Fry, the park’s first civilian superintendent, and a man who put his heart and soul into educating himself and others about the park’s natural resources. Befriend an early mule packer who guided visitors through the nooks and crannies of the back-country throughout a lifetime as he regales you with tales of adventure. The evening is sure to be a memorable experience for the whole family and a perfect way to end your day in the sequoias.

The Sierra Nevada has a rich history of Americans who lived in, explored, and helped protect what we now know as Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. Each summer from approximately early June until Labor Day, Sequoia Field Institute staff conduct historical living history programs in conjunction with a nightly Barbeque at Wolverton Meadow in Giant Forest. The portrayals vary each evening and may be different every year. Park visitors may pay for an all you can eat meal through the park's Wuksachi Lodge and then enjoy the nightly educational entertainment.
