Shaver Lake Volunteers

Trail Work Volunteers

Shaver Lake Volunteers (SLV) is a group of outdoor enthusiasts who work to develop additional opportunities for active recreation in the Shaver Lake area. SLV actively seeks volunteers to aid our efforts in trail construction and maintenance, and for other projects which benefit the Shaver Lake community. Work days are scheduled well in advance and are publicized in several ways, including on our website.

Approximately 35 miles of marked trails are available on land owned by Southern California Edison which allows the public to use for recreation. Multi-use trails are available for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. About eight miles are marked for Nordic Skiing.

Trail Maps Available: A complete map of the Shaver Lake basin and a separate Nordic Ski Trails Map along with descriptions can be downloaded from www.shaverlakevolunteers.org. Many local businesses have printed maps for sale.

Types of Volunteer Work Needed

Volunteers are always needed to clear encroaching vegetation, maintain erosion control, remove trash and install trail markers. We assign volunteers on the basis of age and skill levels so that a wide range of people can benefit from the experience of improving the recreation opportunities for people visiting the Shaver Lake area.

All work days include opportunities for Environmental Education including forestry conservation and management, the place of fire in the forest environment, wildlife habitat issues and history of the area.

Appropriate Ages for Volunteer Opportunity: All ages are welcome, younger children will be limited in tool use for safety and parental supervision is required.

Special Skills that May be Required or Helpful

Each person is given instruction as to the proper use of tools to accomplish the task at hand and in proper safety procedures for their protection and for the safety of others.
