South Fork American River Trail

This trail system connects public lands along the South Fork American River with State and Federal Public Lands around Folsom Lake  at the Folsom State Recreation Area. Most of the lands that support the trail system were purchased by the American River Conservancy between 1989 and 2010 and donated to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to preserve wildlife habitat and create additional low-impact recreational opportunities. The trail is open to hikers, mountain bicyclists and equestrians.

ATTN: Hastings creek cannot be crossed during high runoff seasons.

There are four (4) trailhead access points for the South Fork American River Trail:

(1) Greenwood Creek River Access (4 miles north of Coloma on Hwy. 49);

(2) Magnolia Ranch Trailhead (5 miles north of Coloma on Hwy. 49);

(3) Cronan Ranch Regional Trails Park (located on Pedro Hill Road off of Highway 49, 6.5 miles north of Coloma); and

(4) Salmon Falls - Skunk Hollow Trailhead (on Salmon Falls Road 6 miles south of Pilot Hill).

Each trailhead offers opportunities to explore the South Fork American River, local creeks and enjoy expansive views of the canyon. Hiking, bicycling and horseback riding difficulty varies from easy to moderate, depending on the route. The best times of year to visit this trail are in the Spring and Fall.
