South Yuba Independence Trail

Located in Nevada County in the South Yuba River canyon and within South Yuba River State Park.

The trailhead is located at 19764 State Highway 49, Nevada City, CA 95959 (5 miles north of Nevada City).

The trail follows a former mining ditch through a Sierra foothill forest with Yuba river views. Rock walls and wooden bridges called flumes provide historical interest, with a large U-shaped flume crossing Rush Creek.

A Nevada County favorite, with visitors coming from around the world.

Parking areas adjacent to the highway with easy trail access and gentle grade. Family friendly. Limited to pedestrians.

Vertical Gain or Loss: approx. 50 feet total (about 10 ft per mile)

Trail Distance: 4 miles total. Two miles in each direction east and west of centrally-located trailhead.

 ADA Accessibility Notes
Wheel chair access for approximately one mile in each direction from trailhead.. Nation's first wildland wheelchair recreational trail was first developed in the 1970's, initially with the help of volunteers. Natural surface path. Famous wheelchair ramps down to Rush Creek one mile west of trailhead. Trailhead includes accessible bathrooms and marked disability parking spaces. Accessible picnic tables in some locations along trail.

Wildflower viewing in spring. Fall colors. Waterfall at Rush Creek one mile west of trailhead. Shaded oak and pine forest canopy for cool summer hiking. Undeveloped surroundings and scenic views.

Dogs allowed on leash. Please pick up after your pet.
