Sutter Creek Charles Dickens Christmas Open House

Enjoy a good old fashioned Christmas in the Gold Country of Northern California. Visit this picturesque Gold Rush town with all of the perfectly preserved buildings glowing with Christmas lights and natural pine wreaths. Sutter Creek has put on a beautiful and heart warming Christmas Open House for the last several decades to kick off the holiday season and bring the warmth and spirit of Christmas back into your heart.

Always the first full weekend of December, Sutter Creek celebrates the start of the Holiday Season with Santa coming to town on a sleigh and going down Main Street to the historic Sutter Creek United Methodist Church on Main Street to meet with all the children and light the Community Christmas Tree.

Saint Nicholas (Victorian Santa), his wife, and Charles Dickens character friends wander the streets and go inside the stores to wish all a happy season. These characters have elaborate Victorian costumes and love playing their roles! There are musicians on the street and carolers to help make this experience one to remember.

Local shops on Main Street are beautifully decorated and stay open late to serve you refreshments and appetizers. For the children, there are free arts and crafts at the Historic United Methodist Church, so mom and dad can enjoy their shopping.

Saturday, "Las Posadas" event takes place. The "Los Posadas" is an old tradition of Joesph and Mary riding a burro trying to find shelter for the night. As they wander down beautiful Spanish Street, their way lighted by luminarias, each home turns them away until they end up at the stables on Main Street.

This wonderful weekend will bring the magic of Christmas back into your life. Many people travel from all around to enjoy this holiday tradition.
