Tehachapi Museum and Errea House Museum

Tehachapi Museum and Errea House Museum

Located in the southern Sierra Nevada, the Tehachapi Museum and Errea House Museum are operated by the Tehachapi Heritage League.  The Tehachapi Museum features exhibits on Mammoths and early man, mining, a blacksmith shop, local family history, railroads, ranching, and farming. Photographs and information about the catastrophic 1952 earthquake and resulting damage to the southern Sierra Nevada area are featured in an exhibit.

There is a small textile gallery with rotating exhibits.  The Milano Gallery showcases the history and accomplishments of the Native Americans of the area - the Kawaiisu.  It includes one of kind Kawaiisu baskets.  Included in the exhibit is a large map showing the sites of the early Kawaiisu villages.  Photographs show the local pictographs and petroglyphs. Field trips to local historic sites are provided seasonally.

Across the street from the main museum, which is located in the old Kern County Library building, is the Errea House Museum.  It depicts a family home of Tehachapi, built between 1900-1930.  There is a parlor, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, and two bedrooms with period furnishings.  Outside of the home is a garden typical of Tehachapi during the period that the Errea Family occupied the home.
