The Hungry Hut is the very first fast food business established at Shaver Lake. The Hungy Hut is a very small, but quaint " A " Frame building, located at the corner of Tollhouse Road (HWY 168) and Buckeye. It was built in 1965 by Otto Vetter, a retired California Highway Patrol Vetran. Mr. Vetter ran the establishment under the name, "The Cuckoo Hut", and served the typical hamburgers, fries and milkshakes. He did this alone for a couple of years until he could not keep up with running the business by himself.

The Cuckoo Hut was closed for a few years until Angelo Vlahavas and his wife bought the successful establishment in the early 1970s,and renamed it "The Hungry Hut". In 1998, Earl and Linda Sinks purchased the business, that has become of the longest established businesses in all of Shaver Lake. The Hungry Hut is well known for their unique Hut Burgers and especially their local fresh fruit milkshakes like boysenberry, strawberry and peach (in season).

Tourists call The Hungry Hut from all over the state inquiring about weather and road conditions before coming up to Shaver Lake. Inside the Hungry Hut is a Mini Art Gallery, featuring the photography of local artist, Peter Knapp. His unique style captures the majestic scenery and wildlife of the Sierra Nevada. Peter's professionally matted and framed exquisite photographs are available for purchase right off the wall.

The Hungry Hut is closed only two days out of the year - Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Hut is a fixture for Fourth of July Fireworks, which draws thousands of people up to Shaver Lake every year. People who came here as kids are now bringing their grandchildren to experience this time honored tradition. Outdoor seating under the stars is available on the deck, with tables and umbrellas. Outdoor seating will handle about 100 people and 20 people can be seated inside The Hut.

Hours Open: 11am to 6pm Mon-Thurs; and 11am to 7pm Friday and Sunday. Saturday - open until 8 pm

This is a local and family owned business. The owners have been coming up to Shaver Lake since 1947. Before buying the business in 1998, they bought a home in the community.

We recycle all aluminum, glass and plastic deposited in our bins.

Pets are welcome outside, as long as they are on a leash. The owners keep a large doggie biscuit jar handy for man's 4 legged friends.
