The Old Pharmacy Building

First built circa 1870, the Old Pharmacy Building has survived two fires and numerous owners over the past 140 years. The Old Pharmacy Building saw many firsts in its day; the first telephone switchboard, the first Frigidaire Fountain Cabinet, and the first neon sign in town. The brick structure was made from bricks manufactured in Colfax.
The store has its own tunnel entrance to the Colfax Underground, a labyrinth of tunnels constructed underneath Colfax by the Chinese immigrants who came to build the Transcontinental Railroad which connected the East and West coasts. The building was constructed from local Colfax red bricks, and has never had a major renovation in order to retain its original character. Even the white signs with red lettering advertising pharmaceutical staples are still posted on the wall.
Today, the Old Pharmacy Building is home to the Greek Cafe which serves ethnic delicacies prepared by owner Elan Vitkoff. The atmosphere is casual like a European cafe. On weekends you can find live entertainment by local artists from 4pm-7pm where you might see anything from pianists to belly dancers!
For the total Colfax experience of yesteryear, the Old Pharmacy offers a package tour including train tickets, dinner for two, and a night in an old town bungalow, c. 1890, overlooking Historic Colfax. Take the California Zephyr at 9:50am any morning, arrive at the historic Colfax Train Depot at 1:00pm. Check in to your 1890s bungalow overlooking North Main Street, then enjoy a lovely meal at the Old Pharmacy Cafe for Greek food and a glass of wine or beer. Stroll around Historic Colfax, see the Depot Museum, the Whistle Stop Quilt Shop, before heading back to the Cafe for live music. After dinner stop in for a nightcap at the Railhead Saloon, then take a leisurely stroll to the bungalow for a restful night's sleep. No Car Required! Travel like your great-grandparents did and take the train.

The Old Pharmacy Building and the Greek Cafe housed inside are owned and operated by Elan Vitkoff and her lovely daughter, Sophia. Elan came to Colfax in 2007 after 27 years as a Chiropractor in the San Francisco Bay Area. Originally from Bulgaria, Elan immediately fell in love with the historic building and the charming town of Colfax. The Cafe serves Greek food with flair, reminiscent of Elan's childhood kitchen.
