The Palisades

Palisades, including Mount Sill

This is the largest concentration of 14,000 foot peaks in the range. It was a favorite haunt of Norman Clyde, a famous Sierra Mountaineer. One of the peaks in the Palisades is named after Norman Clyde.

Recreational Opportunities

In the Palisades one will find the highest concentration of alpine mountaineering in the state of California and the largest southernmost glacier. Excellent fishing, hiking and sightseeing opportunities. A pack train heads into this area. Ski mountaineering.

Seasons Accessible

Spring, summer and fall the road is open. Winter accessibility via road depends on snow.

Fees: The Palisades area is part of the John Muir Wilderness, administered by the Inyo National Forest. Wilderness permits are required for overnight travel. No permit is required for day hikes. Proper food storage is required.
