The Slim Princess Narrow Gauge Locomotive and Dehy Park

Photo © J Stroh
Visit Dehy Park at the northwest end of Independence, California, right on highway 395. This day-use area has the historic narrow-gauge steam locomotive known as the “Slim Princess.” Built in Philadelphia in 1811 it ran on various lines including the Carson to Colorado and Southern Pacific Railroad. More information is available at the locomotive (what a history!).
The park is a great place for a picnic. Independence Creek flows through the park and in the heat of summer is a welcome retreat and playground for future dam builders. Dehy Park also has a conventional full playground for the youngsters and tables and grills for that picnic.
