Whitney Portal at Inyo National Forest

The Whitney Portal area above 8,000 feet at the base of Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in the lower 48 states at 14,496 feet, is an inviting spot for campers, day-hikers and film makers. Inyo National Forest camping sites are available and the Whitney Portal Store, run by Doug and Earlene Thompson, is a welcoming site with supplies, a restaurant and lore and stories galore.

Hollywood has come here for years making adventure films such as "Thunder in the Sun" with Jeff Chandler and Susan Hayward, "High Sierra" with Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino among other important films. The Portal was the place from which Tyrone Power and Linda Darnell first saw the area that was to become "Salt Lake City" in "Brigham Young" as well. The final retirement home for Captain Kirk was nearby in Star Trek 7 "Generations." Recently, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" shot opening scenes on the Portal Road in the snow in winter.

Fishing, hiking and a cool respite from the hot temperatures on the Owens Valley floor are all to be found up at Whitney Portal all summer long.
