We are a full-service, independent bookstore located in the historic Mariposa Hotel Inn (the Stolder Building, built in 1901) and situated in the heart of historic downtown of Mariposa in the western foothills of California's central Sierra Nevada. We are at the southern end of the historic Mother Lode gold-mining region and on California State Route 140, the “all year highway” into Yosemite National Park, one of America’s premier national parks.
Our Books
In addition to a broad selection of new and used books, we specialize in titles relating to the natural and cultural history, art, and literature of Yosemite National Park, Mariposa County, the Mother Lode, the Sierra Nevada, California, and the West, including maps, atlases, guide books, and travelogues of interest to visitors to these areas. Additionally, the bookstore has a large children's book section as well as titles on religion and philosophy; nature, the environment and science; health and healing; history and biography;currents events, and national and global issues; art, music and poetry; home, garden and pets; fiction and classics; along with titles on computers, reference and travel.
Cards, Arts, and Crafts
We also carry gift items such as note cards; blank journals; baskets; jewelery; reading accessories; and crafts by local and international artisans (the latter distributed by an international fair trade organization). We currently feature Art Work by local artists: beadwork, clay sculpture, fairy dolls, book covers, note cards, paintings, photographs (contemporary and historic reproductions) and pottery. Artists currently featured are: Phyllis Becker, Becky Caraco, Ray Colliver, Reva Colliver, Tracy Greenwood, Chuck Oliver, Christine Radanovich, Leroy Radanovich, Sue Rudd, Bob Shockley, Lorie Setterberg, Althea Stevens, and Howard Weamer.
Historic Photograph Gallery
A recently added feature is the Watkins Room, in which we will be displaying photo-reproductions by Leroy Radonovich of historic photographs by Carleton Watkins, George Fiske, and Ralph Anderson, among others; and, occasionally, contemporary fine art photography. Matted and unmatted copies of displayed photographs will be available for sale.
Free Internet, Coffee & Tea
Free internet service, and coffee & tea, organic when available, is waiting in the store along with several cozy chairs.
The Proprietors
Store proprietors Gary and Reva Colliver are long-time community members. Having met and married as climbers in Yosemite National Park in the early '60's, they have traveled widely, yet always returned "home" to the Sierra Nevada, Yosemite, and Mariposa County. They envision their store becoming a local community resource: a gathering place; an "information station"; a venue for artists, writers, musicians, and all kinds of people--local and travelers.
Seasons Open: Open All Year (closed Monday & Tuesday from the beginning of January through the end of March)
With care, wheelchairs and baby strollers can navigate our small store. We have an accessible restroom available to our customers.
Owners occasionally bring quiet, calm pets into the store. We're small with somewhat narrow isles, so it can get tight sometimes; so, if there's lots of folks visiting it would be best to leave our pet friends with someone outside.
