Three Rivers Environmental Weekend

The Annual Three Rivers Environmental Weekend was started in 2007, and is organized by the local group which calls itself the TREW Crew, led by Three Rivers artist, Mona Fox Selph. It has two components, The Green Faire, which is held on Saturday as an educational community celebration at the Three Rivers Arts Center, and the Green Home Tour, which is held on Sunday throughout Three Rivers. The annual weekend is looked forward to by the community and participants from surrounding counties.
The Green Faire is held in conjunction with the Alta Peak Chapter Native Plant Sale. Authors, botanists, artists, local environmental groups, and master gardeners provide some of the booth presentations. The Green Faire is fun and informative, and offers the flavor of an old fashioned village faire. The Green Faire runs from 9am to 4pm and is free. The historic Three Rivers Arts Center is the first building on the left on North Fork Drive, a left turn from Hwy 198 going East.
The Green Home Tour is a part of the American Solar Energy Society’s national annual tour. Homes qualify by being either active or passive solar, and offer a myriad of green architectural innovations such as rammed earth, straw bale, and adobe construction, earth berm, sod roof, and recycled components. The tour has raised funds for Tulare County Citizens for Responsible Growth and the Sierra Club. Homes have included a multitude of inspiring and beautiful features as well. One of the homes shown in the 2010 tour, known locally as “the glass house” was Sunset Magazine’s small space winner for 2009-2010. Tickets are $15 per person, $25 per couple. Call 559-561-4676 to reserve a space. The Tour starts at 12 noon or 1 pm, for two separate tour groups. Meet at the Valley Oak Credit Union on Hwy 198 in Three Rivers, to join car pools.

Laurie Schwaller wrote on April 08, 2011: This fascinating and inspiring annual event gives participants so many opportunities to learn how they may live more harmoniously (and cost-effectively) with their environment, and it allows them to tour visionary homes in beautiful settings full of ideas they can adapt for their own use. The fall weather is delightful, and TREW offers a truly unique way to explore some of the treasures of Three Rivers.
Lisa M Calvert Sims wrote on April 06, 2011: The Green Faire and the fine folks involved in it are wonderful and are striving to make Three Rivers a ’Greener' and more environmentally positive.
Nancy Jonnum wrote on March 08, 2011: The Green Faire is fun and educational. The native plant sale is a good source for plants. But my favorite part is the green home tour. It is a chance to visit many beautiful places in Three Rivers and to learn what others are doing to decrease their impact on the environment.
