The tour travels the trail to the Ishi Marker through Deer and Mill Creek valleys with Beverly Ogle. Ms. Ogle, having grown up in the area and being a direct descendant of the Maidu, shares not only the history of Ishi, but personal history and stories of living in the shadow of Black Rock, home to Ishi, the last of the Yahi-Yani peoples.
The Ishi Marker is placed on the old Lassen trail, deep in Yahi country, above Black Rock on a ridge that separates Deer Creek Canyon from Mill Creek Canyon, a spot known as "The Narrows." The bust of Ishi looking toward the sky, etched on a bronze plaque mounted in concrete and native stone, looks so beautiful against the eastern horizon, facing Mill Creek Canyon with Deer Creek Canyon in the background. The rocks that went into the concrete structure were hand-picked native river rock from Mill Creek, at the base of Black Rock.
Beverly Ogle, historian and author of Spirit of Black Rock, a book about Ishi, grew up in Ishi country on her Grandma's ranch below Black Rock. Her grandma was Maidu, and the Maidu tribe bordered the Yahi territory, so as a child growing up in that area, Bevery and her brother were able to explore many Yahi sites.
After visiting the Marker, and hearing stories about Ishi and the Yahi from Beverly, travel up the road 1.5-miles to Bruff's Camp, named after James Goldsborough Bruff, who during the Gold Rush days, traveled through the Sierra Nevada, almost perishing there in 1849-50. His camp is a small monument to his time in the Sierra Nevada.
