About the Executive Director
Scott, that's me, is the founder and Executive Director for Lasting Adventures, Inc. I have been facilitating the Yosemite High Country Adventure for the past 17 years, in which I have personally logged over 5,000 miles as a guide in the Yosemite backcountry. As both a credentialed school administrator and counselor, I have well over 20 years of experience working with youth. I attended Sonoma State University in California where I obtained both a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Masters in Counseling. I also hold certification in Basic Backpacking Awareness, am certified as a Wilderness First Responder by the Wilderness Medicine Institute of the National Outdoor Leadership School, and am trained as an Outdoor Emergency Care professional. In addition to actively leading and guiding the Yosemite High Country Adventure and through community collaborations and support, I have successfully developed many other youth development programs; and am often requested to present on these topics. When not in Yosemite, you might be able to find me on the slopes around Tahoe or hiking around the Sierra with my dog “Yogi”.
I learned about the “Spirit” of Yosemite at a young age. Camping and adventures in Yosemite were a yearly vacation put together by my single mother of three, Sharyl, who was also battling cancer. Throughout her battle, Yosemite was the one place that would bring her a smile, a sense of adventure, and a sense of revitalization. Our yearly outings to Yosemite were suspended at age 15 when she lost her battle.
The wilderness experience would continue to be a support for me throughout this time of transition in my life. I was re-introduced to Yosemite when I was 17 by my high school leadership teacher. On this outing, I was able to reach the summit of Clouds Rest on a quick one-night backpacking trip. In so doing, I was also introduced to just how grandiose Yosemite really is and the possibilities within.
About Some of Our Guides
Chrissy Murphy - Chris Murphy is from Rocklin, California, and began her backpacking adventures with her husband Tim. She's been hooked ever since. Growing up she had been a child of the outdoors, camping and traipsing around her rural childhood town of Weimar, California.
Sam Allen - Sam Allen was born in Bellevue, Washington, where he resided until he moved to the heavenly oasis of Truckee, California as a young lad. He grew up taking advantage of the Sierra's; fly-fishing, rafting, climbing, wishing he was surfing, skiing, camping, hiking; ultimately developing a deep passion for the outdoors and everything it has to offer.
Braden Beane - Braden Beane participated on his first backpacking experience in 2009 with Lasting Adventures. In 2011 Braden led the entire season with me from May through November. In so doing, during the 2011 season, Braden guided well over 500 miles, 57 days, and 40 nights in the Yosemite backcountry while also guiding International clients to the top of Half Dome another 12 times. Now going into his fourth year as a staff member, Braden has accumulated well over 1,500 miles and many, many more summits.
Lydia Erickson - Lydia Erickson grew up in Northern California, specifically Oakland, Napa and Truckee. Growing up, she loved participating in sports and outdoor activities, especially skiing. As she says, “I’ve been playing outside since before I can remember. The first time I backpacked in Yosemite was as a baby on my dads back and I’ve gone back quite a few times as I’ve gotten older.” At age 16, Lydia completed a NOLS course in the Talkeetna Mountain Range in Alaska, which furthered her interest for the outdoors.
John Munson - John Munson grew up on the eastern shores of New England where he developed a passion for the ocean as well as the forests by surfing and exploring the mountains of the northeast. After moving to Lake Tahoe in 2010 to pursue an interdisciplinary degree in Environmental Science and Outdoor Adventure Leadership at Sierra Nevada College; John fell in love with the Sierra. John has a Wilderness First Responder certification provided by the Wilderness Medicine Institute of NOLS. John is also a Leave no Trace Master Educator through a NOLS course he completed while on a canyoneering course in Utah.
Rick Deutsch - Rick Deutsch is also known as “Mr Half Dome.” He first hiked to the top of Half Dome in 1990. He vowed to do it every year. Many years he did it more than once; he’s now up to over 35 times. He’s written the only book on this extremely strenuous trek: “One Best Hike: Yosemite’s Half Dome.” This book is given to everyone who is doing the one-day round trip. Besides all the classic Yosemite hikes, he’s done Mt. Whitney, Mt. Shasta, the Grand Canyon, Machu Picchu, Galapagos and Mt. Fuji. Rick believes anyone can do the Half Dome hike with Education, Preparation and Motivation. Guests will learn about the history, geology and points of interest on the hike. Rick is certified in Wilderness First Aid.
